Questions & Answers
The best ballroom shoes are made for dancing with either suede or leather soles. There are a wide variety of styles to choose from. If you intend to dance regularly, we strongly encourage you to buy a good pair of dance shoes; your feet will thank you. Worst of all are rubber-soled shoes. Sneakers, canvas deck shoes, tennis shoes, or anything else with a rubber sole should be avoided. Rubber-soled shoes grip far too much for comfortable dancing. It is also best to avoid flip-flops, open-back shoes, and sandals.
Private lessons are valuable for those who wish to get the most out of their dancing. During a private lesson, one of our professional instructors will be your partner and your teacher, depending on whether you are taking lessons alone or with a partner. In these lessons, your teacher will instruct you on elements of partnership, technique, and style, in addition to learning various dance steps. Those who take the time and effort to study partner dancing through private lessons learn more effectively and efficiently than through any other method of instruction.
There are advantages to both study forms; ideally, you should experience both. Group classes afford students more opportunities for social interaction and dancing (i.e., dancing with several people), thus improving "real-world" lead and follow skills. Group classes are also a suitable venue for learning basic patterns. Of course, the drawback to group classes is a need for more personal, one-on-one attention. If you are preparing to learn to dance to a specific song, for instance, your wedding song, you will need private lessons. Private lessons are also ideal for developing and improving your dance posture and fundamental movement skills, and "fixing" whatever elements need improvement in your dancing.
